Fritzl to be moved to care home
Austrian Court Authorises Release of ‘Monster’ Josef Fritzl
88-year-old Josef Fritzl, who was given a life sentence in 2009 for crimes including incest, rape, and enslavement, has been authorized by a regional court in northern Austria to be transferred from a psychiatric facility to a standard prison due to his dementia and no longer being considered a threat.
This ruling opens the door for his potential release into a nursing home after a 10-year probation period, during which he must attend regular psychotherapy sessions and undergo psychiatric evaluations.
His legal representative intends to seek his complete release from prison next year.
Fritzl’s lawyer, Astrid Wagner, told The Associated Press:
“In summary, the court has come to the conclusion that it is indeed the case that he is no longer dangerous.”
Ms Wagner said she planned to submit such a request next year for Fritzl to be released from prison altogether.
Fritzl gained notoriety as the “monster of Amstetten” for confining his daughter for 24 years, subjecting her to repeated rape and fathering seven children with her.
